In 1956, the Baalbeck International Festival began, endorsed by Lebanese President Camille Chamoun, who recognized the majestic Roman temples as a unique backdrop with the potential for significant cultural, touristic, and socio-economic impact. A diverse committee of 12 volunteers took the reins, turning the festival into a cultural and touristic beacon in Lebanon.

Beyond its primary goals, the festival aimed to nurture Lebanese talents through “The Lebanese Nights” initiative, showcasing spectacular local creations and ambitious shows that propelled artists like the Rahbani Brothers, Fairouz, Wadih El Safi, Roméo Lahoud, Sabah, and the Caracalla Dance Theater to fame. This commitment to homegrown talent even led to the establishment of a drama school for Lebanese productions in Beirut in 1966.
